Complaints and Grievances
Informal Complaint Process
The Board encourages parents and community members to discuss their concerns and complaints through informal meetings with the appropriate teacher, principal, or administrator. Concerns should be expressed as soon as possible to allow early resolution at the lowest possible administrative level. Informal resolution is encouraged, but does not extend any deadlines in the formal grievance policies.
Step 1: Contact Appropriate Campus Staff or Department
The most direct route to resolving any campus or department concern is for parents/guardians to first confer directly with the involved party (employee, teacher, coach, sponsor, administrator).
Most concerns will be resolved directly via a face-to-face meeting or email. A request can also be made to confer with a campus administrator at this level. If the concern is not resolved or if there is no communication at this level, move to Step 2.
Step 2: Contact Campus Principal or Department Director
Campus principals or department directors are the next step for hearing an informal complaint that a parent/guardian/student feels has not been satisfactorily addressed during Step 1.
Campus administrators are responsible for the school's operations. The campus principal or designee addresses concerns regarding student schedules, school employee conduct, discipline, attendance, etc.
Example: Athletic concerns for middle school or high school athletes that are unresolved by direct conference with the coach would be directed to the campus principal or athletic director.
If you would like to initiate the process to file an informal complaint, please complete the intake form for students and guardians/parents. Your complaint will be routed to the appropriate department and or campus. If the concern remains unresolved, or no response is received at this level, please initiate the Formal Complaint Process.
Formal Complaint Process
To proceed with a formal grievance, please use the links below. Though informal resolution is the preferred path to resolution, you may file a formal complaint at any point in steps 1 - 2 above. Beginning the formal process within the timelines listed below satisfies the timeliness requirement for the complaint.
Student/Parent Grievance, per FNG (LOCAL): If a student or parent has engaged in the informal process in an attempt to resolve the complaint with the District and has not reached a resolution during the process, the student or parent shall have the later of:
- Ninety calendar days to file a complaint from the date the student or parent first knew, or with reasonable diligence should have known, of the decision or action giving rise to the complaint; or
- Thirty calendar days to file a complaint from the date on which the District provided information to the student or parent regarding how to file a grievance.
If the student or parent has not engaged in the informal process, the student or parent shall have no more than 60 calendar days from the date the student or parent first knew, or with reasonable diligence should have known, of the decision or action giving rise to the complaint or grievance to file a complaint using the appropriate forms.
You may also contact the Human Resources Office at (512) 772-7100. Once we have received the submission, your concern will be forwarded to the appropriate staff.
Upon review of the formal grievance submission, we may still request that you attempt to resolve matters informally at the lowest level, as this is a requirement under Board Policy FNG (linked above).
