• Welcome Parents

    Mrs. Messina's Second Grade!

    Dear Parents,

I would like to take the time to welcome you and your child to first grade. I look forward to working with your family. The more we keep in touch and work together, the more successful your child will be. You can reach me by writing messages in your child's planner, email me at jmessina@bisdtx.org, contace me on Dojo during school hours, or you can call me after school or on my conference time (8:50-9:45) at 512-772-7680. I am often in meetings when I am not teaching, but I will get back to you as soon as possible.

As an educator, I recognize each child's uniqueness. It is my goal to tailor your child's learning to fit his or her needs and allow him or her to reach his or her full potential. I do this in a variety of ways; curriculum compacting, which is finding out what your child knows before I teach a unit so as to tailor the unit to his learning needs, allowing independent study and letting the child's interests guide his learning, modifying materials up or down, and open-ended learning in stations.  I want learning to be fun and exciting! I try to find ways for students to have lots of time for movement and small group interaction. I teach reading, writing, and math in small groups.

Although academic development is critical, I also want your child to develop socially and emotionally. The students have many opportunities to work cooperatively in groups, use technology, play games, and work in self-directed stations. Learning to work with others is an important life skill and gives each child the opportunity to experience new students and ideas.

The students help me write behavior contracts by creating agreed upon rules for our class. I think it is important that the children decide for themselves what rules they want to live by in our classroom.

I am excited to have this opportunity to serve your family and look forward to getting to know you and your child.

    Jill Messina

Have a great day!
