On February 3, members of the Bastrop Area Cruisers visited Bastrop High School to recognize the volunteer efforts of students during the 2022 “Heroes and Hotrods” Veterans Day Car Show. The students were presented with a plaque to recognize their involvement with the event and for helping to make the car show possible.

The annual event honors American veterans with a classic car display and ceremony in downtown Bastrop. An estimated six thousand visitors came to see more than 400 cars. The event could only be successful with the help of students like Clayton Sherman, Kevin, Hoefer and Laina McDonald.

These students, along with their teacher, Derryck Hedley, contributed their time and effort in numerous aspects of the all-day event including registration, check-in, parking cars, and observing the judging techniques used to rate each car’s condition.

Bastrop High School senior Clayton Shermon has participated in the event for two years. “I think this is a great way to learn about teamwork and leadership,” he said.

The volunteer partnership with the Bastrop Area Cruisers is part of a community service project for the Bastrop High School SkillsUSA Auto Tech Car Club. The contest evaluates local chapter activities that benefit the community and recognizes excellence and professionalism in the area of community service.

During the visit, Sherman, Hoefer and McDonald gave their presentation in front of the Bastrop Area Cruisers members about the Veteran’s Day event and their participation that they will be presenting at the district competition next weekend. The car club members gave their feedback and praise about how well the students are doing, not only with their presentation but with helping bring awareness to their community.
