Bastrop ISD Board Calls May 2 Bond and School Board Election


The Bastrop ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted Tuesday, January 21 to call a bond election for May 2, 2020.


Trustees approved the Citizens Advisory Task Force’s (CATF) recommendation of a $140,159,000 bond proposal with no tax rate increase. The ballot will present two propositions as required by law. Proposition A will be a general purpose proposition for $134,248,000, and Proposition B will be a special purpose proposition for $5,911,000.


The CATF, which was led by co-chairs Josh Coy and Robert “Doc” Washington and included 57 additional community members, held seven meetings from October to January examining the District’s demographics and increasing student enrollment growth, district-wide facility needs, educational adequacy, the District’s vision for teaching and learning, and financial capacity.


“We appreciate the hard work and dedication of the Citizens Advisory Task Force and are very proud of their investment of time and energy on behalf of our children and the future of this great district,” said Superintendent Barry Edwards. “In the coming weeks and months, we will focus on educating and informing our staff, parents and the rest of our community about the bond propositions and the projects that are included in them.”


The CATF’s recommendation focuses on safety and security, instructional programs and growth, general renovations and improvements, and special purpose facility upgrades. The bond package also includes funding to acquire land and build a new elementary school, consolidation of Mina Elementary to one side of Hill Street, transformation of intermediate schools to middle schools, substantive renovations to Bastrop High School, additional classrooms at Cedar Creek High School, and parking and drive improvements at elementary schools.


The Board of Trustees also voted to call a school board election on May 2 for places 3 and 4. Incumbents Billy Moore and Molly McClure have filed for re-election for places 3 and 4, respectively. Community member Gwendolyn Robinson has filed for place 4. The filing period for the school board election ends February 14.


Early voting for the May election will take place at nearly all BISD campuses and the Service Center from April 20 to 28. Voting hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm each day with extended voting on April 27 and 28 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Election day is Saturday, May 2.
