2022 Message from Superintendent Barry Edwards
I hope you have enjoyed your holidays and time with friends and family. As we near the end of the Winter Break and approach the start of our second semester, I wanted to share this update.
Bastrop ISD staff will return on Monday, January 3, and classes will resume for students on Wednesday, January 5. To help prevent the spread of COVID, we will continue offering vaccination clinics at several school locations. The schedule is listed below. You may also be able to access testing at local pharmacies.
- January 5 at Mina - 4-7 pm
- January 6 at CCIS - 5-7 pm
- January 7 at Red Rock - 4-7 pm
- January 11 at LPE - 4-7 pm
- January 12 at Bluebonnet - 4-7 pm
- January 13 at BIS - 5-7 pm
Bastrop ISD will offer free COVID testing at Memorial Stadium beginning today, Friday, December 31. The testing site is open to the public and will operate 7 days a week from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the exception of New Year's Day. It will be closed to observe the holiday. The test is both a rapid test and a PCR. In addition to the Memorial Stadium location, there are also testing sites in Smithville (near Seton Hospital) and in Bastrop (near Roadhouse Restaurant).
The CDC recently adjusted its quarantine recommendations. However, the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Education Agency have not provided instructions to school districts related to this new guidance. Therefore, we will continue to maintain our existing quarantine protocols. A staff member or student who tests positive must quarantine for 10 days from the date symptoms began or 10 days from the date of the positive test if there were no symptoms. If you have been exposed to someone who is positive, we recommended that you quarantine, but we are not requiring you to do so. The STARS after-school program and the Child Development Centers will follow the licensing requirements of the Texas Department of Health & Human Services as it relates to COVID.
Bastrop ISD will continue to track positive COVID cases on our website each week so please continue to report those; however, we will no longer contact trace positive cases. As you've been doing, staff who receive a positive test result should report using the Employee Health Reporting Form, and parents should report to the school nurse if their child receives a positive test. Students and staff having COVID symptoms should stay home and get tested.
If you have questions, please contact your child's school on Monday when we reopen or send your question to news@bisdtx.org. We look forward to seeing our staff and students next week. Until then, safely bring in the New Year and enjoy the rest of your Winter Break.
Happy New Year!
Barry Edwards
