School Board Calls May 2021 Bond and Board Election
January 22, 2021
(Bastrop) – The Bastrop ISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted Tuesday, January 19 to call a bond election for May 1, 2021. The $183,650,000 bond proposal will have no tax rate increase.
Trustees were presented with the recommendation for the bond proposal from the Citizens Advisory Task Force (CATF). The group’s representatives included Evan Moilan, along with fellow members Lindsay Kana, Greg Mueller, and co-chair Josh Coy. The ballot will contain two propositions as required by law. Proposition A will be a general purpose proposition for $177,829,00, and Proposition B will be a special purpose proposition for $5,821,000.
Included in the bond proposal are two new elementary schools in Bastrop and Cedar Creek, technology infrastructure for virtual learning, safety and security upgrades, reconfiguration to a PK-5 and 6-8 instructional model, general renovations and improvements to existing campuses, and special purpose facility upgrades.
“As Evan said in his presentation to the board, what a difference a year makes!” said Superintendent Barry Edwards. “We are so proud of the work of the task force and their continued commitment to crafting a bond package that presents an exciting and positive direction for this great district. Even after a year of this pandemic, there is cause to be optimistic in Bastrop ISD, and we look forward to sharing the details of this proposal with our community.”
The CATF was formed in 2019 to examine the school district’s increasing student enrollment, district-wide facility needs, educational adequacy, and the future of teaching and learning. That work resulted in a bond election called for May 2020, which was cancelled due to the pandemic. The task force reconvened beginning in November of 2020 to discuss changes to the District’s needs as a result of the pandemic, and to discuss updated demographics, enrollment trends, and financial capacity.
The Board of Trustees also voted to call a school board election on May 1 for places 1 and 2. Incumbent Kellye Seekatz has filed for re-election for place 2. Rick Rivera, who was appointed to fill James Allen’s vacant seat due to retirement/resignation, has filed for place 1. The filing period for the school board election ends February 12.
Early voting for the May election will take place at all BISD campuses and the Service Center from April 19 to 27. Voting hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm each day with extended voting on April 26 and 27 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Election day is Saturday, May 1.
