BISD Students Selected to Accompany Hannibal Lokumbe to Philadelphia
March 1, 2019
(Bastrop) – Two band students from Bastrop ISD have been selected to accompany composer and jazz trumpeter Hannibal Lokumbe when he travels to Philadelphia next month to debut his musical project Healing Tones at Verizon Hall.
Gwendolyn Ibarra is a freshman at Cedar Creek High School and plays the alto saxophone in the marching band. Haley Stembridge is a sophomore at Bastrop High School and plays the French horn. Both students have been in the Bastrop ISD band program since the sixth grade.
According to Kenneth Gilbreath, band director for BHS, and Dalton Davis, assistant band director for CCHS, the students were chosen in a drawing through their participation in a musical workshop series at the Lost Pines Art Center held last fall with Lokumbe. Ibarra and Stembridge are set to accompany Lokumbe, along with parents and chaperones, to Philadelphia at the end of March. They will also attend a special performance of Healing Tones as Lokumbe’s guests.
Healing Tones is an hour-long tribute to Lokumbe’s great grandmother, a Cherokee Shaman who was a member of the Trail of Tears. The composition will feature The Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Maestrao Yannick Nézet-Séguin and a mass choir under the direction of Dr. Donald Dumpson.
