The University Interscholastic League, the state’s governing body of high school athletics for public schools, celebrates its 100th anniversary this school year. In honor of this celebration, the Austin American-Statesman sports staff has selected the top 100 players who participated in high school football in schools from the Austin area. Bastrop ISD Athletics is proud to announce that three players from Bastrop were recognized on this list.
#17. Bivian Lee, Bastrop Emile: A quarterback in the 1960’s at Bastrop PVIL school. Lee set a school record with 21 career interceptions as a defensive back at Prairie View A&M before starring in the secondary for the New Orleans Saints.
#58. Clarence Roberson, Bastrop: An all-state center and defensive tackle at different schools and different leagues, Roberson transferred from Emile High School – Bastrop’s PVIL team for Black students – to Bastrop High School his senior year and helped the Bears make a long playoff run in 1966.
#92. Josiah Monroe, Bastrop: Diminutive dual-threat quarterback played wide receiver at UTSA. He set school records for total offense (10,257 yards) and passing yards (7,674) while leading the Bears to the 2010 district title with an upset win over Westlake.
