Girls Who Code at Camino Real Elementary: Empowering Future Programmers
(BASTROP, TX) - At Camino Real Elementary in Bastrop ISD, the Girls Who Code club is inspiring young girls to explore the world of computer science and technology. Founded during the 2023-2024 school year, the club was initiated by a team of passionate educators - James Hallamek, Heather Augustine, and Jadyn Navaira. Each sponsor brings a unique set of skills to the group. Hallamek has a background in 3D printing, Augustine was learning about teaching computer science and coding through the school’s library/computer lab units and Navaira has experience in video production and editing. Together, they created a space for girls to connect with the world of coding.
The club's mission aligns with the core values of Girls Who Code, a national nonprofit organization for third through twelfth grade students on a mission to close the gender gap in technology. By offering free, flexible, and engaging curriculum, Girls Who Code helps participants explore coding, problem-solving, and computational thinking in a fun and supportive environment. The curriculum is adaptable to the girls' interests, ensuring that their experience is both educational and enjoyable.
The club meets every Monday afternoon for an hour and has seen impressive growth in its second year. In its inaugural year, the club had between 15-20 girls, but for the 2024-2025 school year, the club roster has grown to approximately 45 members. Each week, around 20-30 girls attend the after-school meetings, doubling the participation rate and showing how much excitement and interest there is among the students in the field of computer science.
The club provides a platform to encourage girls to think of themselves as future programmers and tech innovators. By focusing on creative projects, such as coding, 3D printing, and video production, the students are learning how to bring their ideas to life while breaking down the barriers that often discourage girls from pursuing careers in technology.
Through this club, Camino Real Elementary is not only nurturing the next generation of female programmers but also helping to redefine the image of what a coder looks like. Girls Who Code is leading the way in making technology accessible to all, regardless of gender, and is helping girls develop the skills they need for a bright future in the ever-evolving tech industry.
