Credit By Exam
-
The Texas Education Code (TEC), §28.023, allows students in primary grades to accelerate a grade level and students in secondary academic courses to earn credit for a course on the basis credit by examination.
In Bastrop ISD, we administer Credit by Examination (CBE) for acceleration without prior instruction four times each year (Grades 1-12). These tests are designed to provide an opportunity for students to receive credit for a grade level or course in which the student has had no prior instruction. The testing windows for this school year are listed below.

Credit by Examination For Acceleration, Grades 1-5
The examination of acceleration is available for BISD students who wish to skip an entire grade level. Students will test for mastery of math, language arts, science, and social studies material for the grade level through which they wish to accelerate. The Examination of Acceleration is not offered on a subject-by-subject basis. Exam content is based upon the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. Current legislation requires students to score an 80 percent or higher on each of the individual four tests that are taken at the same time.
Official score results will be communicated to a student's parent/guardian and the home campus after testing. If the student has met the score requirements indicated above, the campus counselor will coordinate with the student regarding any necessary schedule adjustments.
Credit by Examination Grades 6-12
A student in grades 6-12 may be awarded credit based on performance on a CBE taken either with no prior instruction or with prior instruction. Students may not attempt to earn credit by exam for the same high school subject more than two times.
Current legislation requires students testing without prior instruction to score 80 percent or higher on the exam(s) to earn course credit. Students testing with prior instruction must score a 70 percent or higher for credit recovery purposes. Exam content is based upon the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.
Official score results will be communicated to a student's parent/guardian and the home campus after testing. If the student has met the score requirements indicated above, the campus counselor will coordinate with the student regarding any necessary schedule adjustments.
If a student fails to earn credit by exam for a high school course before the beginning of the school year when the student would normally be expected to enroll in that course according to the district’s course sequence, the student must satisfactorily complete the course in order to earn credit.
